Time is optimal to alter Man Utd's formation - Amorim states.

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was one of seven first-team stars to miss the Boxing Day win against Newcastle.

Boss Ruben Amorim says that changing Man Utd's tactical system due to media pressure would have been "his demise" for him.

In a first against Newcastle United, Amorim abandoned his customary back three formation with wing-backs and opted to deploy an standard four-man defense with two holding midfielders.

By his own admission this at times became a six-man defensive block in the closing minutes as his side dug in for a victory - securing just their second clean sheet of the season.

While he once notably stated that even the highest authority could force him to adjust his approach, Amorim maintains the option to utilize varied formations has always been part of his strategy.

However, he clarifies he could only alter the tactics when his team were performing at an acceptable level - lest it would appear as if he was giving in to external criticism.

"At the time I arrived here last season, I recognized maybe I lacked the players to play well in that formation, but it was the start of a journey," he commented.

"The goal was to forge an philosophy. Today is a different moment. We lack a lot of personnel, and we have to be flexible, so they see why we are switching things up.

"The change isn't because of the demands of the media, or the fans.

"When the press discuss altering the system repeatedly, I can't change because the players will believe I'm changing because of you and I believe that is the downfall for the manager.

"Once we are performing strongly in our system, then is the right time to adapt.

"We are going to grow into a better side because when all the personnel are available, we are not planning to use a back three all the time."

Injury Crisis Continue

With only two victories in their last eight outings prior to defeating Newcastle, it is questionable whether Amorim is accurate to state his team have been playing well.

He is, though, managing with a depleted roster, with multiple first-team players already confirmed absent for the forthcoming fixture against struggling Wolves.

That total will grow if playmaker Mason Mount fails to shake off the knock that led to his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will miss the Wolves clash, despite the fact he is understood to be urging his boss to allow him to return after his muscle problem.

"Bruno is already saying he has to train," said Amorim. "But there is no chance he is going to play against Wolves. No chance. That's definitive."

The Captain's Role Remains

However, the 31-year-old will probably continue to be deeply engaged, as while most injured players view matches from a private box, Fernandes was seen monitoring the pre-match routines from the mouth of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim expects his leader to carry on offering input.

"The guy is a leader," he declared. "He cannot be the type of player that when he is not playing, he's silent and offering advice. He's always speaking. That is the reason he's the captain.

"There are flaws at times - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a lot of good things. Even after he recovers, he goes to watch the rest of the squad practicing. There are a many things you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he desires my position or not, but he's a leader. He is a true captain."

Return Schedule for Injured Personnel

Although the specific date for the captain's return - and that of fellow injured stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unknown, by the end of January, the club will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental competition.
